Brutal Tony Pollard Injury Should Affect Free Agency Payday
The Dallas Cowboys fell to the San Francisco 49ers in the Divisional Round on Sunday evening. Questions will swirl around Dallas all offseason, and free agency could be busy in Dallas. The biggest question mark in the open market is Tony Pollard, who left Sunday’s game with an injury and was ruled out with a high ankle sprain.
After the game, more details were released on Pollard’s injury, and it’s not good news for the running back.
Tony Pollard had six carries for 22 yards and a pair of catches before exiting the game. This season, he emerged as a primary option for Dak Prescott and the offense, and he was expected to secure a nice deal in free agency from somebody.
With Ezekiel Elliott still under contract, the Cowboys reportedly considered using the franchise tag on Pollard, meaning he would earn around $10 million in 2023.
The untimely injury to Pollard puts him at around a three-month recovery time frame, and that could drastically affect his suitors in free agency.
Pollard finished the regular season with 1,007 rushing yards and nine scores and another 39 catches for 371 yards and three touchdowns.
The offense sputtered on Sunday against the 49ers, and now they will have a long offseason in Dallas once again as they fell short of expectations.
With the injury to Pollard, the Cowboys might use the tag on him even more, and other teams across the league could bypass Pollard, especially with so many talented players in free agency and a running back-heavy draft class this year.
