Brady retires again, Raiders left looking elsewhere for QB

Future first-ballot Hall of Fame QB Tom Brady announced his retirement Wednesday, one year after originally retiring in 2022. The legendary 45 year-old quarterback ends his career as the most decorated player in NFL history and will ultimately not end up with the Raiders in 2023, so long as Brady remains retired this time around.

Heavy speculation had built regarding a potential reunion in Vegas between Brady and his former offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, but with Brady’s renewed retirement, the Raiders and their fans will be left wondering “what if” as they await the arrival of the team’s next starting quarterback following the departure of QB Derek Carr, the Raiders’ all-time passing leader.

Brady and McDaniels won six Super Bowls together, three with McDaniels serving as offensive coordinator on Bill Belichick’s Patriots staff.

Brady’s final season in the NFL saw him leading the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to their second straight NFC South title before losing to the Dallas Cowboys in the wild card round of the playoffs.

With a Tom Brady arrival no longer in the cards for the Raiders, the team may have a slightly better idea of their options at quarterback as we move into the offseason. The Raiders hold the 7th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and are surely doing their due diligence on the incoming quarterback prospects, a number of which are projected to be taken high in the first round.

If the Raiders prefer not to rebuild the position through the draft, several veteran quarterbacks will be available in free agency or via trade, as well as a handful of promising young quarterbacks around the league who could be on the trade block.
