Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho is available for £88million due to financial impact of pandemic

Borussia Dortmund have reportedly given up the fight to keep star winger Jadon Sancho and have lowered their asking price, putting Chelsea and Manchester United on red alert.

Dortmund demanded a fee of £108million during the summer window last year, but United failed to stump up what they wanted as their long pursuit ended in Sancho staying in Germany.

But the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic means the German side have been forced to reconsider their stance and will now accept £88m for the 20-year-old.

Dortmund are facing a loss of up to £65m this financial year, before factoring in the cost of potentially missing out on the Champions League and sacking manager Lucien Favre, replaced by interim boss Edin Terzic until the end of the season.

Needing to sell either star striker Erling Haaland or Sancho, Dortmund bosses have decided on a sporting basis to sell the winger, who struggled in the first half of this season, and keep Haaland despite widespread interest in the Norwegian.

The club – assuming Sancho will leave this summer – have considered potentially replacing him with Lyon’s Memphis Depay on a free, or PSV’s Donyell Malen.

Sport1 Journalist Patrick Berger posted on Twitter: ‘Borussia expect Sancho to leave Dortmund in [the] summer. Manchester United and Chelsea are interested in Sancho (3 goals, 9 assists).

‘Erling Haaland (14 goals, 3 assists) should definitely stay for one more year. Haaland has an exit clause in 2022 for £65million.’

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were the frontrunners for his signature last year and were reportedly willing to pay £93m to sign him, £5m above his current asking price.

While United are still interested in Sancho, they may decide to focus their spending on other positions after the arrival of wideman Amad Diallo from Atalanta, which could give rivals Chelsea and City the edge in the race for his signature.
