Black TikTok creators boycott Megan Thee Stallion’s ‘Thot S—‘ to highlight cultural appropriation

Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but some Black TikTok creators are fed up about it.

If you’ve ever found yourself going down the TikTok rabbit hole, you know the app is filled with millennials coming up with viral dances to popular songs. Houston’s very own Megan Thee Stallion is a fan favorite on the app, with viral dances to her hit singles “Savage,” “Captain Hook” and “Body” helping launch her further into stardom on and off the app.

GOT MY VOTE: Megan Thee Stallion should totally consider a gubernatorial run

Her latest hit single “Thot S—” will not be following the same path though — because there’s now a strike brewing.

Black creator Erick Louis (@theericklouis) took to TikTok over the weekend “to let the world know he made a dance to Megan’s latest single,” per INSIDER’S Moises Mendez II.

@theericklouis

If y’all do the dance pls tag me 🙄 it’s my first dance on Tik tok and I don’t need nobody stealing/not crediting

Louis can be seen moving along to the track as if he’s about to perform, but then he stops and the words, “Sike. This app would be nothing without [Black] people” appears on the screen. (Yikes!)

The sad part? He’s absolutely correct. White creators still tried to copy Louis’ moves — and there’s now an entire Twitter thread showing how they failed to do so and instead subjected themselves to ridicule from Black Twitter.

What you don’t see a lot of on TikTok is Black creators being credited for their dances that are usually ripped off by white creators. In March, for example, TikTok star Addison Rae appeared on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” and performed multiple TikTok dances — and didn’t acknowledge a single Black creator, according to Mendez II.

Rae and Fallon were immediately met with some pretty fair criticism across social media. Fallon, in turn, decided to invite the Black creators on the show via Zoom. Maybe he decided to began reinforcing COVID-19 protocols? Who knows.

Whatever his reasons — his actions definitely contributed to the strike.

I, personally, am not a TikTok creator, but I do enjoy spending way too much time on the app before a not-so-good night’s rest. And well, it’s about time. I mean really, it’s bad enough we have yet to receive reparations, but now we have to give up our dance moves, too?
