On Saturday morning, November 12, a man was arrested in connection with a stabbing at the H-E-B located at 2308 E. Riverside Drive in South Austin. On Monday, November 14, the Austin Police Department reported that the stabbed person in the incident is a deputy with the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office.

The perpetrator, a 40-year-old man, was allegedly shoplifting from the supermarket, according to surveillance video and witness testimony, before a clerk asked him to return the items to the shelves. The accused shoplifter then requested law enforcement, after which the Bastrop County Sheriff’s deputy appeared at the store, for what the Austin Police Department refers to as “his regular shift.”

The deputy attempted to assist with the incident upon his arrival. After a short exchange, the perpetrator then allegedly stabbed the deputy numerous times, including in his neck. The deputy, a former Austin Police Department officer, was taken to a nearby hospital. His injuries required surgery, from which he is recovering.

The Austin police arrested the man implicated in the incident, who, according to APD, “admitted to stabbing the deputy and showed no remorse.” He is currently being held at the Travis County Jail on a $100,000 bond and is charged with attempted capital murder of a peace officer.

MySA has reached out to APD for further context on the incident.
