David Seaman has praised Aaron Ramsdale for his phenomenal displays for Arsenal this season, with the goalkeeper having played a vital role in the club’s title challenge.

Mikel Arteta’s side hold a five-point lead over defending champions Manchester City following their dramatic 3-2 win over Bournemouth on Saturday.

The Gunners fought back from 2-0 down to secure all three points at the Emirates Stadium, with Reiss Nelson scoring an injury time winner.

Seaman highlighted Ramsdale’s vital contribution in the match to keep Arsenal in the game, as well as his overall performances during the Gunners’ impressive campaign.

‘People forget he’s only 24,’ the Arsenal legend said. ‘So that is amazing for me because I didn’t join Arsenal until I was 26 – what he’s doing now at 24 is just phenomenal.

‘He’s making big saves all the time. There was one on Saturday at 1-0 that was world class.

‘It wasn’t like a flying save or anything like that but it was a really technical piece of goalkeeping, which he did brilliantly, and he’s been doing that all season.

‘There’s a confidence building in him and it is a calm confidence, because as a goalkeeper, you can’t be like flying here, there and everywhere and ranting and raving – although Peter Schmeichel made a good career doing that.

‘In my career I was totally the opposite, I was laid back and I wasn’t a shouter all the time, so there’s different ways and I think Aaron – he’s got a good mix and it’s his own mix as well.’

Ramsdale will be looking to emulate Seaman in winning the title with Arsenal, with the former goalkeeper having won the top flight on three occasions during his career.

The 24-year-old has kept 11 clean sheets so far this season to support Arsenal’s bid for a first Premier League title since 2004.

Only Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope has achieved more clean sheets than Ramsdale with 12.

Ramsdale and Pope are both fighting to become England’s number one, but remain behind Everton’s Jordan Pickford.

Seaman, who earned 75 caps for England during his career, believes Ramsdale can establish himself as Gareth Southgate’s first choice goalkeeper.

Does he deserve more caps? Definitely,’ Seaman said.

‘He only has three and he needs to build on that because he has to be able to feel comfortable playing at that level.

‘Jordan Pickford has been brilliant in an England shirt, you can’t doubt that. I wouldn’t imagine Gareth is thinking about having another number one at the moment.

‘I imagine that Aaron will be number one at some stage and sooner or later will get that opportunity.’

Ramsdale made his international debut in 2021 when England beat San Marino 10-0.

His most recent cap game in June, when England suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to Hungary.
