Arsenal must convince new first-choice striker Eddie Nketiah he will not revert back to a peripheral role next season if they are to keep the forward beyond the end of season.

The England Under 21 striker has overtaken Alexandre Lacazette as Mikel Arteta‘s preferred centre forward in recent weeks and are ready to make one final attempt to sign Nketiah to an extension.

The academy graduate has spent most the season on the bench was expected to leave on a free transfer when his contract expires at the end of June, indeed his advisors have spent the last few months in talks with numerous overseas clubs ahead of the summer transfer window.

Nketiah is understood to have generated particular interest in Germany and France; while a number of Premier League sides are also set to make the forward formal offers at the end of the season; Crystal Palace long-standing admirers.

However, Nketiah’s recent promotion at the Emirates Stadium is likely to lead to Arsenal making one last attempt to convince him to stay.

Nketiah has already turned down numerous contract offers from the Gunners, but the prospect of playing more regularly for Arsenal could yet influence his final decision.

The striker is prioritising playing time as he ponders his next move and will want to be satisfied he will have a greater opportunity to feature next season before even considering a new deal at Arsenal.

And while Nketiah is key part of Arteta’s plans at the moment, Arteta wants to sign at least one new striker this summer – with Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus among the players they are keen on – which could leave Nketiah back out in the cold.

Nketiah will wait until the end of the season before making a decision on his future but Arsenal are gearing up for one last effort to keep their young striker.
