Analyst makes the case for Rams to re-sign Baker Mayfield

It may be a bit hyperbolic to say that Baker Mayfield resurrected his career during his five-game stint with the Los Angeles Rams in 2022, but at the very least he convinced teams that he still has something left in the tank.

ESPN’s Bill Barnwell recently stated Mayfield may have found himself in the perfect situation for this point in his career.

“Stafford has said he expects to return to action, but the 35-year-old also is battling an elbow issue that nagged him through the past two seasons,” Barnwell said. “At the very least, the Rams have to prepare for the possibility Stafford will miss time again. …Given Stafford’s health, staying put in Los Angeles might be one of his best chances (for Mayfield) to see significant playing time. A one-year deal in the $4-5 million range would be reasonable.”

Mayfield’s season got off to a disastrous start. Any hope of turning his career around with the Carolina Panthers after four years with the Cleveland Brown was all but crushed by December when Mayfield asked for and was granted his release.

Free to pick any team he wanted, Mayfield chose the Los Angeles Rams, who were in need of a quarterback after Matthew Stafford’s spinal cord injury. He promptly led the team to a 17-16 come-from-behind win over the Las Vegas Raiders.
