Analyst implores Cowboys to look into Kyle Pitts trade

Although the Atlanta Falcons have fielded multiple calls for second-year tight end Kyle Pitts, the team is on record stating it has no plans to trade him.

However, Sports Illustrated’s Mike Fisher believes if Atlanta is at least hearing teams out, then Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones should have Falcons general manager Tony Fontenot on speed dial.

“But if the Falcons are answering the phone? Literally 31 teams should be calling,” Fisher said. “And that includes Dallas, which has some fine options at tight end … without any of them approaching the 6-6, 250-pound ‘wide receiver-like’’ Pitts as a prospect. … Dalton Schultz is valued enough here that he is playing on the $11.6 million franchise tag. At the same time, his rookie backups Jake Ferguson and Peyton Hendershot are so valued that in 2023, the Cowboys seem likely to part ways with the pricy Schultz and go with the kids.”

Dalton Schultz, who’s just 26 and has three straight seasons with at least 50 receptions and 540 receiving yards, has the second-highest guaranteed salary and the sixth-highest cap number on the Cowboys roster.

If Dallas is looking to shed some cap space while not losing Schultz’s production, Pitts actually makes a lot of sense.

The former No. 4 overall pick was third in yards (1,026), fifth in targets (107) and eighth in receptions (68) among tight ends during his rookie season. This season, he totaled 28 receptions for 356 yards and two touchdowns before suffering a season-ending knee injury in Week 11.

Although unlikely, if the Cowboys did land Pitts, it would likely require a package of a first-round pick plus more.
