With a 90% chance of precipitation slated for Thursday, April 6, and 80% chance on Friday, April 7, officials in a San Antonio-area municipality have preemptively shut down roadways prone to flooding.

Alamo Heights police and public works departments notified the closure of all gates in the Olmos Basin area. Per the alert, “local rainfall and associated upstream run-off have given cause for the closure of all gates in the Olmos Basin. All Roadway in the Olmos Basin will remain closed.”

Gate 2 on Devine (between Dick Friedrich and Alamo Heights Blvd.) and Gate 3 (at St. Luke’s and Alamo Heights Blvd.) closed at 8 a.m. with more than half an inch of rain falling on the San Antonio area according to rain totals at the San Antonio International Airport. Gate 4, at Jones Maltsberger and St. Luke’s, closed shortly after 8 a.m.

Rain is in the forecast for most of the South-Central Texas area with hail and locally heavy rain east of the I-35 corridor possible through Friday. Minor flooding may become possible for the area.

Slick roads have already caused accidents throughout the area. An overnight crash saw an 18-wheeler rolled over near the I-35 exit to Loop 410 near Windcrest just before 2 a.m. Thursday, according to an officer with the San Antonio Police Department. No injuries were reported.
