A San Antonio homeowner is still repairing damage from last month’s powerful thunderstorm as another round of heavy rain threatens the area.
Maria Salazar, who lives on the city’s West Side, said the storm left her neighborhood looking like “a war zone” after trees were uprooted and fell through her roof.
Weeks later, Salazar is still waiting for repairs to be completed. She said she hopes the work will be finished within the next few weeks, barring any setbacks.
With more rain in the forecast, Salazar said her first concern was whether the unfinished portions of her home could withstand the weather.
Her carpenter told her the repairs should be able to handle the rain, but Salazar said she remains nervous, particularly because of a tree near her home.
“My neighbor has a tree; I don’t know what’s going to happen,” she said.
The latest storm threat is expected to be driven more by heavy, widespread rain than destructive winds, according to KSAT’s Weather Authority. The rainfall could create a risk for flooding in parts of the area.
For Salazar, the possibility of more rain brings back memories of the damage she experienced last month.
“I’m hoping we don’t get any water, but I have PTSD, so I have towels ready and candles going,” she said.
Salazar said the storm uprooted trees that fell onto her home and caused significant damage. The repairs have cost her more than $16,000, not including cosmetic improvements.
She is now focused on protecting what she can, including items with sentimental value that remain inside the damaged portion of her home.
Among those belongings are her daughter’s quinceañera items from about 15 years ago, along with photographs and photo albums.
Because the damaged area is not safe to enter, Salazar said she cannot retrieve the belongings unless she can reach them from outside.
With another storm approaching, she is considering getting a tarp to help protect the area.
