A local man was arrested on May 7 for allegedly giving  heroin to and sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl, according to an arrest affidavit.

Juan Antonio Mendez, 42, was arrested on charges of aggravated sexual assault-child.

The victim’s mother noticed in the last few weeks that the victim was coming home under the influence and, when questioned about it, the victim said that Mendez had persuaded her to try heroin and sexually assaulted her, the affidavit said.

The victim and her mother had been staying with Mendez temporarily in April while waiting to move into their own residence.

Mendez allegedly pressured the victim to take heroin “because it was the cool thing to do,” and she told police that while she was high, Mendez forced her to have sex and she “felt powerless to do anything.”

The victim also believed that she may have been sold for sex by Mendez one time, but couldn’t remember due to being under the influence.

Mendez is being held on a $75,000 bond.
