Aces star Kelsey Plum adds to Darren Waller, Josh McDaniels speculation
Las Vegas Aces star Kelsey Plum has added to the growing speculation that her husband, Darren Waller, was traded from the Raiders to the New York Giants on Tuesday due to a beef with head coach Josh McDaniels.
Shortly after Waller’s trade out of Las Vegas was reported on Tuesday afternoon, Vic Tafur of The Athletic tweeted that the move came 10 days after Plum’s and Waller’s wedding. According to Tafur, McDaniels “accidentally leaked the news of the wedding to reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine” and the tight end was “upset” with the coach when the Las Vegas Review-Journal “posted a story announcing the wedding was scheduled later in the week.”
Per Tafur, Plum and Waller hadn’t announced their plans to get married.
Tuesday’s trade also came two weeks after McDaniels told reporters at the combine that the 2020 Pro Bowler would be “a big part of what we do going forward.”
Raiders All-Pro running back Josh Jacobs was among those who seemingly disapproved of the transaction in the immediate aftermath, as he posted a cryptic tweet.
Though Waller was among the best tight ends in the league in 2020, he’s had two consecutive injury-shortened campaigns since. In just nine games last season, he finished with only 28 receptions for 388 yards and three touchdowns on 43 targets.
