The Memphis Grizzlies are still undefeated at 5-0 after crushing the Portland Trail Blazers, 124-103, at Moda Center on Thursday.
It was a nip-and-tuck contest entering the fourth quarter. But the Grizzlies pulled away, outscoring the Trail Blazers, 33-20, in the closing period.
Cameron Boozer had a memorable evening, registering his first triple-double with 18 points, 12 rebounds, and 12 assists in 28 minutes. According to Commercial Appeal’s Damichael Cole, the 19-year-old Boozer became the second-youngest player in league history to record a triple-double.
Cole noted that Boozer missed beating Josh Giddey’s record by just 20 days. Giddey, who plays for the Chicago Bulls, set the mark with the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2022.
Boozer, the No. 3 pick, shot 6-of-10 from the field, including 4-of-5 from long distance.
Overall, Memphis went 18-of-42 from beyond the arc.
Cedric Coward had 17 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals, while Isaiah Stewart added 18 points and three rebounds off the bench.
Boozer’s all-around brilliance made up for Ty Jerome’s inefficient performance. Jerome, one of the league’s top scorers, shot 3-of-12 from the field for 10 points.
Boozer displayed the well-rounded game and physical maturity that made him a blue-chip prospect out of Duke. Many felt that he was the most NBA-ready among this year’s rookie class.
He is averaging 15.4 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 6.2 assists. He, however, has to work on his accuracy, as he is only 32.4% from the floor.
The Grizzlies have a promising future with Boozer, Jerome, Coward, Stewart, Zach Edey, and Jaylen Wells forming the core.
Memphis will face the Sacramento Kings on Saturday.
