Timberwolves’ Jaden McDaniels agrees to $40 million contract extension before opener

Jaden McDaniels will remain with the Minnesota Timberwolves after agreeing to a one-year contract extension on Monday, just two days before they face the Miami Heat in their season opener.

McDaniels has been a key member of the Timberwolves with his two-way impact and steady improvement.

ESPN’s Shams Charania first reported McDaniels’ latest deal.

“Minnesota Timberwolves All-Defense forward Jaden McDaniels has agreed to a one-year, $40 million extension that will keep him under contract through the 2029-30 season, agents Nima Namakian of Innovate Sports and Bill Duffy of WME Basketball tell ESPN,” posted Charania on X.

Last season, the 26-year-old wingman averaged career-highs of 14.8 points, 51.5% shooting, and 2.7 assists, plus 4.2 rebounds, 1.1 steals, and 1.o blocks in 73 games.

He will continue to play a big role in the new season, teaming up with LaMelo Ball, Anthony Edwards, Jonathan Kuminga, Rudy Gobert, and Ayo Dosunmu in leading the core.

Ball expressed awe at McDaniels’ all-around attributes and his two-way impact.

“I love Jaden. I mean, 6’10,” move, run, play defense, cut back, shoot the three, really anything you need. Damn near a (NBA) 2K player. It’s crazy,” said Ball, who is in his first year in Minnesota.

The sixth-year forward, whom the Timberwolves drafted with the No. 28 pick in 2020, has also provided swagger and moxie to the Timberwolves. He infamously blasted the Denver Nuggets in last season’s playoffs, calling them terrible defenders. Minnesota eliminated Denver in the first round, 4-2.

The Timberwolves will aim to finally get over the hump in the upcoming campaign and enter the NBA Finals for the first time.
