Doug Christie gets blunt about Domantas Sabonis, Malik Monk injury statuses

The Sacramento Kings are scheduled to face off against the Portland Trail Blazers for a preseason game on Tuesday, but the team will be without two of their main pieces in Domantas Sabonis and Malik Monk, although it’s not quite clear what the injury is for either player.

Kings head coach Doug Christie wouldn’t reveal what injury, if any, that either Domantas Sabonis or Malik Monk are dealing with, as per Brenden Nunes of Sactown Sports.

“First and foremost, it’s preseason. So what we really want to do is get everybody healthy and ramped up for the regular season,” Christie said. “As soon as they are ready, we’ll see them on the floor.”

When asked if that meant either player was not healthy, all Christie would say is it meant they’re not playing during the Kings’ preseason game against the Blazers.

Sabonis will slot in as the Kings’ starting center, while Monk will reprise his role as the team’s super sub. In Sabonis’ case, he’s seen his name come up in trade rumors both during last season leading up to the deadline and during this past offseason. He has remained with the Kings, however.

This past year, Sabonis was limited to only 19 games due to a knee injury. In the games he did play, he averaged 15.8 points, 11.4 rebounds and 4.1 assists with splits of 54.3 percent shooting from the field, 18.5 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 72.7 percent shooting from the free-throw line.

Monk appeared in 62 games, including three starts, at just about 22 minutes per game. He averaged 12.5 points, 1.9 rebounds and 3.0 assists with splits of 43.8 percent shooting from the field, 39.5 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 87.9 percent shooting from the free-throw line.
