Jacob Tobey, the San Antonio Spurs TV play-by-play announcer for the past two NBA seasons, announced he’s returning to the organization in a social media post Friday.
His return comes after a woman, who claimed to be Tobey’s longtime girlfriend, wrote on social media that he was involved in a cheating incident.
The allegation accused Tobey of being unfaithful with the relative of a Spurs player and was first reported by Front Office Sports, who also announced his departure with the organization.
KSAT couldn’t independently confirm the allegation.
Now, Tobey is set to return calling Spurs games alongside former Spur Sean Elliott for his third season.
“I thank the Spurs for allowing me time to step away to sort out issues in my personal life. I understand that I will have to regain trust within the organization and across our community, a community where I will continue to be present with enthusiasm and passion,” Tobey said in the post. “I believe I have the best job in the world and am thrilled to be able to continue as the team’s play-by-play announcer.”
We also reached out to the Spurs for a comment following his announcement.
“Yes, we can confirm that Jacob is our Spurs TV play-by-play announcer,” Tom James, vice president of communications for the team, said in an email to KSAT.
Before joining the Spurs, Tobey previously worked as a sports anchor in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Denver while also moonlighting as a play-by-play announcer for Fox Sports and the Pac-12 Network.
