Manu Ginobili believes the Spurs will be contending again in 2-3 years
Right in line with what we all believe.
As special adviser to basketball operations for the Spurs, Manu Ginobili has far more insight to the team behind the scenes than we do. During a recent interview on a Chinese live stream, he was asked how long he thinks it will take before the Spurs are contending for championships again, and here is what he had to say:
“It’s hard to tell. But we hope and believe that now with Victor (Wembanyama) and this upcoming draft, that we’re going to have two top tens, in two/three years, we can be out there contending. I don’t know if being favorited, but being in the playoffs and being good.”
His answer was pretty in line with what we all would expect. Expecting them to contend this upcoming season would be way too much to ask but give the current core (plus what they get in this draft class) another year or two to grow and bring it all together, and they could be vying for a higher playoff seed soon. For that matter, to be “contending” or close to it in two to three years, that probably means they hope to rise to postseason contention as soon as this season, which is what will be generally expected.
Of course, another thing to keep in mind is that if the last few years have taught us anything, it’s that the league is wide open. The old dynasties are on their way down, and for the first time in NBA history, a new champion is guaranteed to be crowned for the sixth year in a row. As the Miami Heat showed last year and the 5th seed Dallas Mavericks appear to be poised to show again with a 3-0 lead in the Western Conference Finals, you just have to make it in, then anything is possible.
