Eight migrants, including a child, locked in a train car, were rescued last Sunday by Border Patrol agents, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
The migrants were discovered by a Border Patrol canine while agents conducted inspection duties on a train carrying vehicles, CBP said in a news release. They were locked inside the vehicles, with no ability to exit.
“Smugglers have no regard for those they prey upon,” said Del Rio Sector Chief Patrol Agent Anthony “Scott” Good. “Temperatures in this area exceed 100 degrees daily. Were it not for the actions of our highly trained agents, this situation could have had a tragic outcome.”
The group included three Mexican nationals, three Salvadorans, one Guatemalan and one Chinese national. CBP said all eight were medically assessed and transported to the Uvalde Station for processing.
Authorities say extreme heat, limited water and confined spaces can quickly become life-threatening. The U.S. Border Patrol urges anyone in distress to call 911 immediately.
