49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan frustrated Rams got Matthew Stafford

San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan seems pleased with his current quarterback plan. That involves veteran Jimmy Garoppolo starting over rookie Trey Lance even though the Niners traded up to acquire the third pick ultimately used to select the North Dakota State Bison signal-caller.

Shanahan may have had a different quarterback in mind early into the winter months.

Per Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk, Shanahan recently appeared on the “Flying Coach” podcast along with Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay and lamented that the Rams were able to land Matthew Stafford via a trade with the Detroit Lions that became official in March.

“That was frustrating,” Shanahan admitted about the transaction. “Everyone was telling me it was a possibility, and Stafford is the man. I studied him hard coming out of college, and we played against him so we know how good he is.”

Shanahan won’t have much to complain about if Garoppolo plays well enough to keep Lance a spectator through at least next summer or if Lance proves he’s a legitimate franchise quarterback at some point down the road. If, however, Stafford becomes an All-Pro under McVay, Shanahan and those within the San Francisco front office may have difficult questions to answer next winter.
