The 49ers could add a rookie to their quarterback room, as they have done in each of the last two drafts. San Francisco made Trey Lance the No. 3 overall pick in 2021, trading up to acquire the high-potential but inexperienced passer. Last year, the Niners made Brock Purdy the last overall pick in the draft.

Purdy ended up finishing this past season as the 49ers’ starter, helping guide the team to the NFC Championship Game before suffering a torn ligament in his right elbow.

Purdy is expected to be sidelined until at least September, while Lance is returning from the season-ending ankle injury he sustained in September. The 49ers also have Sam Darnold on the roster.

Thompson-Robinson (6-1, 205) completed 69.6 percent of his passes for 3,169 yards, 27 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions in his 13 starts for the Bruins in 2022, adding 645 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns. His completion percentage ranked sixth in the nation.

The 23-year-old quarterback has completed 63.3 percent of his passes for 10,710 yards, 88 touchdowns, and 36 interceptions in his five seasons at UCLA, adding 1,826 total rushing yards and 28 rushing touchdowns.
