The number comes from unused 2022 and refunds from incentives that were not earned. An example, provided by David Lombardi is Jimmy Garoppolo’s deal he signed in August of 2022. With his injury that ended his season, the team saved 2.5 million based on his incentives.

It is important to note this is not the cap space that they have left for 2023. This does make it easier for the team to attempt to sign their players before free agency begins next week. The team has had to prioritize extending defensive end Nick Bosa, and there have already been reports of other players looking to play elsewhere. With these finalized numbers for the 49ers salary cap, the front office can begin to work on contract offers with an official idea of the cap space they have.
