An 11-year-old boy is in the hospital Friday morning being treated for a gunshot wound to the head he sustained while reportedly playing with a gun with a group of friends, officials with the San Antonio Police Department said.

The incident occurred before 9:30 a.m. on Friday, March 3 in the 700 block of North San Marcos, according to the police. The injured child was conscious when he was transported to a hospital with his father by his side, and police say the wound the boy sustained was self-inflicted.

The boy’s father believed the gun was safely secured and the boy had no access to the firearm, which police say was hidden away in a drawer, according to San Antonio Police Chief William McManus.

Officers are still gathering details on the incident, but officials with the police department assured that more info would be disclosed when supervisors on the scene finish their preliminary report.
