Portion of downtown street will be reduced to two lanes until 2023 during San Pedro Creek project

Beginning Monday, Alamo Street between Interstate 10 and South Flores Street will be reduced to a two-lane road until early 2023 while construction crews replace the Alamo Street Bridge, the San Antonio River Authority said in a news release Wednesday.

The closure is part of the second of four phases in the construction of the San Pedro Creek Culture Park — a collaborative effort between the river authority, Bexar County and the City of San Antonio to create a new park that will run along the waterway. The project started in 2016, and the city was able to open a portion of the park in 2018.

Once completed, the park will span 2.2 miles and will be filled with public art. It will also serve to restore and preserve the creek’s ecosystem and environment.

“It is a beautiful space for residents to interact with the art, water and culture in the downtown area,” said Monica Trevino-Ortega with the San Antonio River Authority. “People remember the San Pedro Creek when it was still a drainage ditch and they have loved seeing what has come to life.”

She said having parts of the park open has helped relieve frustration with the years-long closures as it gives stakeholders and residents a glimpse of what lies at the end of the construction project.

Houston Street to Nueva Street will remain closed during the current phase, which is expected to be completed in October 2021. Though the Alamo Street partial closure is part of phase two, which isn’t expected to begin for several more months, crews have closed Alamo, Camp and Guadalupe streets for pre-construction, Trevino-Ortega said.

There is not a set date as to when the second-phase construction will start. According to Trevino-Ortega, the pandemic pushed back the initial start date.
