Man found dead in Guadalupe County was last seen in Austin

A man’s body was discovered on the side of a road in Guadalupe County over the weekend, officials said.

Moises Cabrera, 55, was found dead at about 10 a.m. Sunday in the 6500 block of Prairie Lea Road, in Kingsbury near the San Marcos River, according to the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials don’t know how Cabrera perished, and investigators are working to determine what happened leading up to his death.

Sgt. Zachary McBride with the sheriff’s office said a passerby heading to work saw Cabrera’s body and called 911.

When deputies searched the scene, they did not find any indication of how Cabrera came to be there. Officials said Cabrera was originally from San Marcos but was living in Austin.

Investigators said there were no vehicles nearby or any vehicle tracks in the grass near his body.

Cabrera’s body did not have any visible trauma or evidence indicating an assault or that he was hit by a vehicle.

His wallet and other personal belongings were still with him, which deputies said helped them quickly identify Cabrera.

The evidence tended to indicate he was not moved after he died, deputies said.

An autopsy to determine his cause and manner of death is pending at the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office. Investigators said it has been delayed because of current policies in screening for possible COVID-19 infections.

Cabrera was last seen alive on Friday in Austin, more than 50 miles away. A security camera captured video of him leaving his hotel room by himself at about 9:30 a.m. at the Country Inn and Suites, 7400 N. Interstate 35.

He did not appear to be in distress, investigators said.

His last known communication with family occurred at about 10:30 a.m. Saturday, authorities said.

“If anyone knows where he was between the third and the fifth, we would appreciate that info,” McBride said.

Authorities are asking anyone able to fill in the gaps with information, or who may have had contact with him, to call Investigator Layne Porter at 830-379-1224 ext. 2341 or email [email protected].
