Juventus ‘join Roma in race to sign Pedro’ with winger’s Chelsea contract set to expire

Juventus are set to rival Roma for the signature of Chelsea winger Pedro this summer, according to reports in Italy.

The Spaniard’s contract with Chelsea ends next month with currently no suggestion that the West London club will look to extend his stay after a five-year stint.

As it stands, Pedro will become a free agent and Juve have entered the race to sign the 32-year-old, according to Italian publications Il Tempo and Calciomercato.com.

Fellow Serie A club Roma are also known to be interested in the World Cup and Champions League winner, but Juventus boss Maurizio Sarri will hope his relationship with Pedro will help secure the deal.

The Spaniard worked with Sarri at Stamford Bridge last season, making 52 appearances under the Italian, scoring 13 goals and winning the Europa League.

Sarri has history of signing former players at new clubs and The Old Lady have also been linked with Pedro’s Chelsea team-mates Jorginho and Willian.

The Serie A leaders also have a track record of signing players on free transfers, having brought in stars such as Aaron Ramsey, Adrian Rabiot, Emre Can, Sami Khedira and Dani Alves for no fees in past years.

Willian, like Pedro, is out of contract in June and boss Frank Lampard has been drawing up replacements in the wide positions to cater for the loss of the pair, including Porto’s Jesus Corona.

The Premier League is set to restart again following the coronavirus pandemic just two weeks before Pedro’s expiry, while it is not yet known how clubs will deal with their out-of-contract stars.
