Victor Wembanyama plays chess with fans in New York park

Neither rain or shine will stop Wemby from having fun.

While Victor Wembanyama is on social media, he isn’t known for having a huge presence on it, especially during the NBA season because his work ethic and discipline is so high. That all changed late last night after the Spurs’ win over the Brooklyn Nets when Wemby posted on X for the first time since the Olypmics, asking where the best spots are to play chess in New York City are.

He must have gotten some answers, because this morning, he tweeted to fans meet him in the southwest corner of Washington Square Park in Manhattan to play chess, and show up they did, even though the weather was not conducive.

It looks like everyone had a great time, and Wemby later thanked everyone for showing up, even in the rain, as well as suggested the NBA have a players-only chess tournament with the proceeds going to charity. (Perhaps an idea for All-Star weekend?)

Even though Wemby is well on his way to being one of the most recognizable faces in sports (if he isn’t already), he’s not afraid to get out and interact with fans. He also continues to show that despite being a celebrity, he’s still just like us: funny, nerdy, and down to earth. He’s exactly the type of endearing athlete that Spurs fans have been used to leading their club across the decades, and it seems like every day, he does something else off the court to make us love him even more.
