Open Thread: The evolution of the Supermax salary

A graph representing the top salaries underscores the financial growth of the sport

Have you seen this? The graphic follows the upward trending NBA Supermax contract. This is insane.

Someone took the time and energy to make a graphic of the highest paid player in the NBA by year. If you think about it, the players in the graphic are the most obvious, but for the most obvious reason — they are the creme-de-la-creme of the basketball hierarchy.

Ewing, Bird, Magic, Jordan, KG, Shaq, Kobe, Curry, Jokic and now Tatum.

What I hadn’t realized is there were years when the maximum actually lowered. I would have assumed the budgets increased yearly. I’ve missed lulls in wage negotiations. It’ll be interesting to see what may have caused those dips in salary. Stay tuned.
