Open Thread: Spurs Summer League coach Kenny Trevino has two decades with the Silver & Black

The Spurs video coordinator is running the show in Sacramento and Lass Vegas

The San Antonio Spurs played in their first Summer League game last night in Sacramento’s California Classic. As is the tradition with the Silver & Black, their head coach, Kenny Trevino, is a homegrown member of the organization getting his first opportunity at the helm.

Trevino is currently a video coordinator with the Spurs. The thirty-one-year-old started with the Spurs twenty years ago as a ball boy. He became assistant equipment manager in the 2016-17 season. He also worked in San Antonio’s video room.

He got his first opportunity on the hardwood as an assistant coach with the G-League affiliate Austin Spurs.

Although he is serving as head coach for Summer League, Trevino maintains focus on his current regular season role.

“One of [my goals] is to be a head coach someday, but all I’m worried about right now is being the head video coordinator. That’s my role. When I think about my journey, and what I’ve gone through, I’ve thought of it as a very linear process. ‘I’m going to do this. Then, I’m going to do this.’ And I didn’t think that I would zig and zag my way to get to where I’m at. Yeah, sure, one day, I do want to be a head coach, but I’m focused on right now being the best head video coordinator I can be.”

Fans need to look no further than Will Hardy, the current coach of the Utah Jazz, to see how the Spurs set up members of their organization with solid basketball acumen with opportunities for growth and success in the NBA.

Spurs play their second game in the California Classic tonight as they take on the Sacramento Kings at 7:00 PM on ESPN2.
