Open Thread: Spurs celebrate “Champions for Change” grant recipients

Per a Spurs press release:

As a result of last season’s inaugural “Champions for Change” event, the San Antonio Spurs are proud to announce the distribution of nearly $100,000 in grant funding to local nonprofit organizations recognized for their extraordinary community impact. Through funds raised at the Champions for Change event, which brought together Spurs players, coaches, and fans for a night of philanthropy and connection, four local nonprofits were selected as this year’s Champions for Change: Gardopia GardensSan Antonio Food BankMerced Housing Texas and Holy Redeemer Food Pantry.

Patricia Mejia, Chief Impact and Inclusion Officer at SS&E stated,

“Our community continues to show what’s possible when compassion meets action. Champions for Change is a reflection of San Antonio’s spirit, people from every corner of our city coming together to lift one another and build a future rooted in unity and belonging.”

The grant recipients were chosen through a collaboration involving player input and Spurs Give leadership.

The winners include:

  • Gardopia Gardens empowers communities to lead healthy and sustainable lives through garden-based learning. They plan on utilizing the grant money to help expand its youth and community garden programs, teaching nutrition, sustainability, and wellness across San Antonio.
  • San Antonio Food Bank fights hunger and feeds hope by providing nutritious food and resources to individuals and families in need across 29 counties. The organization will use the grant to continue distributing meals and supporting programs that address food insecurity and promote long-term stability for families.
  • Merced Housing Texas creates and strengthens affordable, stable communities for individuals and families with limited incomes. Funding will support community engagement initiatives and resident programs focused on financial empowerment, education, and health.
  • Holy Redeemer Food Pantry provides essential groceries, meals, and support services to San Antonio residents facing food insecurity. The grant will help increase food distribution capacity and strengthen outreach to underserved neighborhoods.
