Open Thread: Project Marvel continues to be a hot button topic
For those outside San Antonio, Project Marvel may not be on your radar. But here in San Antonio, it’s all over the place.
In a nutshell, Project Marvel boils down to Propositions A & B on the November ballot. It involves building a new arena downtown for the San Antonio Spurs.
So far, I personally have received handouts at the Spurs scrimmage as well as two 8 1/2 x 11 mailers supporting the measure. Those informational leaflets state that the Spurs will pay $500 million on an estimated $1.3 billion dollar arena. The rest of the money is scheduled to come through tourism, a 2% hotel occupancy tax.
One of the sheets states “We guarantee the Spurs stay in San Antonio for the next 30 years.”
This was specifically a point on contention at a recent town hall where San Antonio Spurs General Counsel Bobby Perez refused to say whether the team would leave town if voters rejected Project Marvel at the polls.
Various city council districts have been hosting town hall meetings so constituents can ask questions and learn more about the possible financing of new Spurs home.
Next up, District Councilwoman Sukh Kaur will host a virtual meeting on Tuesday, October 21st from 5:30- 7:00 p.m. with San Antonio City Manager Erik Walsh.
The Spurs organization has stood firmly behind both Props A & B, adding their logo, images of a basketball, and photos of the coyote on the various materials. There has been opposition from local citizens as well. Overall, there have been questions, and these meetings have offered residents the chance to ask before early voting kicks off next Monday.
