Open Thread: LeBron James will serve as United States flag bearer in Olympic opening ceremony
The four-time MVP is the first member of the US Men’s National Team to receive the honor
After appearing in the Olympics in 2004, 2008, and 2012, LeBron James has sat out the last two Summer Olympics.
In 2008, James became the all-time leading scorer in U.S. men’s basketball history. He, along with Michael Jordan, are the only players to win an NBA MVP award, NBA championship, NBA Finals MVP, and Olympic gold medal in the same year.
James, who’s garnered one of the most impressive careers in basketball history, continues to accumulate accolades, this time on the international level.
This year, James, who is the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, has been voted by his fellow Olympians to be the Team USA flag-bearer at the opening ceremony Friday in Paris.
James is the first men’s basketball player to carry the flag for Team USA.
In a statement released from London, where Team USA played its final pre-Olympic exhibition game Monday against Germany, James shared,
“It’s an incredible honor to represent the United States on this global stage, especially in a moment that can bring the whole world together. For a kid from Akron, this responsibility means everything to not only myself, but to my family, all the kids in my hometown, my teammates, fellow Olympians and so many people across the country with big aspirations. Sports have the power to bring us all together, and I’m proud to be a part of this important moment.”
LeBron was nominated for the honor by fellow basketball superstar and Olympic baller Stephen Curry.
Olympic opening ceremonies start at 12:30 p.m. CST as athletes travel down the Seine River on custom-made floats.
