Open Thread: Keldon Johnson’s free basketball camp is a family affair
The third annual event reveals the growing popularity and need for what the Johnson’s bring to the community
This past week, Keldon Johnson and his brother Kaleb held a free basketball camp here in San Antonio. Spurs fans may recall his elder brother Kaleb is a member of the Austin Spurs, the G-League affiliate of the San Antonio squad.
This is the third year the Johnson’s have held a free basketball camp here in San Antonio.
Carolina Teague, San Antonio writer, reporter, commentator and all-around guru for all things sports, went behind the scenes to cover the two-day camp:
“Upon my arrival at Cornerstone High School in San Antonio, the first person who greeted me was a woman named Linda…I asked Linda who the best point of contact would be to talk about the camp. Linda directed me to Keldon and Kaleb’s 55 year-old father, Chris Johnson. Chris was located in building two of where the camp is held- this building is where all of the Elementary school-aged kids were actively running drills, playing basketball, and having fun. I couldn’t help but notice Mr. Johnson’s aura reminding me so much of Keldon’s demeanor. Nice, welcoming, and friendly.”
Keldon’s father shared:
“Keldon is really family oriented. Life is all about family. Family is why you wake up in the morning. We are a good, hard-working, blue-collared family. And we have a great support system. If one of us does something, we all do it, and we are all-in. That is why we are here today.”
In addition to Keldon, Kaleb, and their father Chris, the son’s eldest brother, Kyle, younger sister Kristen, aunt Linda, and mother Rochelle were all on hand during the camp serving in various roles.
It was then Johnson matriarch, Rochelle, who initially came up with the idea for the Johnson’s to host a camp. The plan germinated when Bryant Stith, a 10-year NBA veteran who played for the Denver Nuggets, Boston Celtics, and the Cleveland Cavaliers, hosted a free basketball camp Keldon and Kaleb had attended as children.
Ms. Teague got some real up-close-and-personal time with the Johnson’s, including Keldon, whose motto has always been that “dreams do come true.”
As the camp increases in size each year, so does the Johnson’s involvement with the San Antonio community. Keldon has so many charity events, especially around the holidays when needs for struggling families can be most apparent.
