Victor Wembanyama tries to win gold for Les Bleus against a US team loaded with superstars

Welcome to the Game Thread. Veterans of the Game Thread know how we do things around here, but for all you newbies we have a few rules. Our community guidelines apply and basically say be cool, no personal attacks, don’t troll and don’t swear too much.

This is the gold medal game that everybody wanted to see. The French looked very beatable in the group stage, but upped their game in the tournament by benching Rudy Gobert and playing inspired defense. The home crowd in Paris helped Les Bleus to an improbable 95-90 overtime win over Japan after trailing by 4 in the final seconds in regulation, and then they defeated Brazil 78-66 to advance to the gold medal game.

The Red White and Blue breezed through the group stage, but had to up their game in the semifinals to defeat a hot-shooting and motivated Serbian team led by Nikola Jokic, barely escaping with a 95-91 comeback win after trailing most of the game.

The French are big underdogs today, but fans of both teams are winners as both teams will win a medal. The French will have the home crowd behind them, and it will be loud in Paris tonight. Joel Embiid had his best game of the Olympics against Serbia, and he’s going to be motivated by the French boos to another solid game for the Americans. This could be LeBron James’ last Olympic game, so he’s looking to have a big impact. Steph Curry finally found the shooting range against Serbia, but it will be interesting to see if Victor roaming the perimeter will affect his shooting.

Game Prediction:

Victor Wembanyama will block at least one Steph Curry shot.

One final word:

Go Spurs GOOOOOO!!
