The North East Independent School District trustees discussed on Monday whether to consolidate three of its campuses in an effort to combat declining enrollment. After a vote of 7-0, that motion passed.
In December 2024, the district said it was looking at Wilshire Elementary, Clear Spring Elementary and Driscoll Middle School for consolidation.
At the time, the district told the board of trustees that enrollment was down 17% over the last decade despite increasing expenses due to inflation.
After trustees originally considered delaying the vote until April of 2025, that motion failed at a vote of 5-2.
The district held meetings at each school to discuss the consolidation plans in January.
Over the last ten years, NEISD enrollment numbers showed the following:
- Wilshire Elementary has seen a 43% drop

- Clear Spring Elementary has seen a 27% decline

- Driscoll Middle School saw a drop of 41%

The district also cited an aging population as a factor for the decreased enrollment numbers.
