KSAT’s full coverage of wintry weather in San Antonio, Hill Country

As temperatures dip below freezing and ice is expected accumulate in South Central Texas, KSAT is providing the latest on Saturday night’s conditions in and around San Antonio.

According to KSAT Weather Authority Meteorologists Adam Caskey, Justin Horne, Shelby Ebertowski and Elliott Wilson, San Antonio is likely to experience a switch from cold rain to freezing rain.

A heavier round of freezing rain in the Hill Country can also lead to dangerous travel conditions.

Large ‘pileup’ in Kimble County

Multiple first responders were dispatched to a “20-vehicle pileup” on Interstate 10 near Junction in Kimble County.

Junction is approximately 115 miles away from the KSAT 12 newsroom in downtown San Antonio. At this time, it is unclear if any injuries have been reported in the crash.

Flight travel impacted by the weather

In a news release, the City of San Antonio announced 63 flights scheduled between Sunday and Monday have since been canceled due to the city’s wintry weather.

Officials also announced which city services, programs or events would be delayed or canceled outright Sunday and Monday because of the weather.

West Side shelter takes in more clients

Alex Arias with Last Chance Ministries, a church located on the West Side, told KSAT’s Pachatta Pope late Saturday night how the facility is operating during this weekend’s wintry weather.

Can’t be ‘beet’

Emergency crews in Bexar County are outside treating roads with a familiar mix of ingredients such as sand and chat rock.

According to KSAT’s Devan Karp, those same crews are also using beet juice to prevent roads from serious icing.

How TxDOT is preparing for potential icy roads

KSAT’s Courtney Friedman went inside the Transguide offices on the Northwest Side to show how the Texas Department of Transportation prepares for expected freezing rain and icy roads.

Just before 10 p.m., out of an abundance of caution, Transguide told Friedman that it would shut down the flyovers from Loop 1604 westbound to Interstate 10 eastbound as well as Loop 1604 eastbound to Interstate 10 westbound.

Elsewhere in San Antonio, San Antonio police reported ice near the Interstate 35 north and U.S. Highway 281 interchange. TxDOT crews also reported a crash that caused two lanes to close at U.S. Highway 90 eastbound near Callahan Road.

School closures

More than a dozen school districts and local colleges announced their plans to cancel classes on Monday, Jan. 26.
