KSAT to host phone bank Monday on NEXTGEN TV

KSAT is now broadcasting a NEXTGEN TV signal as of 2 p.m. on May 6, 2024.

NEXTGEN TV is delivered by an over-the-air signal and requires an antenna. It can help reduce or eliminate costly subscriptions by providing more free channels to choose from. KSAT will offer at least five different channels including ABC, MeTV, Heroes and Icons, Movies, and StartTV.

We understand there may be questions from viewers, which is why KSAT is hosting a phone bank on Monday. The phone bank will be held from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Operators will also be available to answer all your questions regarding NEXTGEN TV. The phone number to call is 210-351-1363.

** Important Note: If you do not use an antenna and you watch television through a cable, satellite or streaming service, no action is required.

For antenna users:

  • The most important thing to know if you watch television with an antenna is that you have to rescan your channels after 2 p.m. on Monday, May 6 to continue watching local TV, like KSAT. (Access through your TV settings. Read more about it here.)
  • To receive the full NEXTGEN TV experience, you must have an internet-connected NEXTGEN TV-enabled television (**or a NEXTGEN TV converter box) and use an antenna. **A warning on the NextGen TV converter boxes: The currently available converter boxes don’t seem to be reliable. KSAT engineers have tried five versions and none of them worked.

Tips for rescanning for all antenna users

You need your TV remote to rescan. The process could vary depending on the brand of television that you have. Find the settings or menu option and look for menu options like “Channels,” “Rescan,” “Autotuning,” “Add Channels,” or “Antenna.” If you’re not sure how to rescan your antenna, the FCC has a helpful chart that provides step-by-step instructions for several television brands.

If after a rescan, you still don’t see your local channels, move your antenna and rescan again.

  • Flat panel or square antennas don’t seem to work very well.
  • It is best to get an outdoor antenna but if that isn’t possible, rabbit ears or a newer antenna might help.
  • Try moving your indoor antenna near a window to help reception.

You’ve rescanned, but can’t get the signal — now what? Here are some FAQs and explanations:

Why can I get 12.2 and 12.4 but not 12.1 or 12.3?

Basically, the channels broadcast on a different frequency and from different locations. KSAT’s 12.2 and 12.4 signals are broadcast on a UHF signal while 12.1 and 12.3 are broadcast on a VHF signal. It may take some experimenting with antenna placement to get them both.

Where should I aim my antenna

The KSAT signal is being broadcast from the Elmendorf/Calaveras Lake area (southeast Bexar County). Try facing your antenna in that direction. If you have an antenna with “rabbit ears” make sure they are extended fully and are perpendicular to the direction of southeast Bexar County. Depending on how close you are to the area, you may have to adjust to find the sweet spot. Remember to rescan each time you reposition your antenna.

My outdoor antenna isn’t working, what should I do?

We DO NOT recommend that anyone get on a ladder or on their roof to adjust their outdoor antenna. Instead, please call the person who installed it for you and have a professional do it.

I want to get an outdoor antenna. Who should I call?

It may not be easy to find a qualified person to install your antenna. Please look for a professional service. One option that we know of is Frank Guido. He is not able to speak but can text if you text him at 210-724-4141.

I want to buy a new antenna. What should I look for?

The most important thing about buying a new antenna is to make sure you get a receipt and that you’re allowed to return it if it does not work in your home. Again, flat panel or square antennas are not ideal because they may not pick up enough of the signal. The best antennas are outdoor antennas on a pole. (See above for installation options.) You can also get a new indoor antenna. It needs to receive both UHF and VHF signals. Be sure to rescan your new antenna after you install and connect it.

I’ve lost my TV remote control. How do I rescan?

If you do not have a TV remote control, you may not be able to rescan. You may need to contact your TV manufacturer for a replacement.

How else can I watch KSAT?

You can watch KSAT over-the-air with an antenna, with a cable or streaming service or you can stream KSAT 12 local programming for free on most smart TVs, streaming devices and even your phone. Get more information about our streaming apps here.
