Instagram reel goes hilariously snowclone all over NBA players

Comparing Wemby and Bol Bol has always been disrespectful, but what if Wemby is the LeBron James of Bol Bols??

Sometimes a sentence without a metaphor is like a fish without a bicycle, but other times the perfect metaphor raises the mundane to the delightful, and the delightful to the sublime. A snowclone is a regularly used language template, like ‘X is the new Y,’ that’s regularly exploited for quick communication. The snowclone in this case is ‘X is the Y of Z.’

Ever since the tweet below made the rounds a few weeks ago, fans have gone wild comparing players using both their style and standing in the league.

Specifically, this Instagram reel does a great job of making a ton of perfect (and often hilarious) connections between players. The following comparisons, in particular, demanded comment and appreciation :

LaMelo Ball being the LaMelo Ball of Tyrese Haliburtons

This was a great inclusion — one funny enough that Kawhi might even laugh gargle. Both LaMelo and Hali are savant passing guards with funky shots and poor defense, but the former is obviously a level below the latter. What makes this awesome, though, is that LaMelo is associated with himself, since there’s no one else (except for perhaps Hali, of course) that’s really like him in the league.

James Harden as the Cory Joseph of Luka Doncics

Luka used to be the next Harden, but now Harden is just the washed up version of Luka. I’m not sure what Cory Joseph did to warrant being called out, though. Is it just because he’s from the land of Maple Leaf? Anyhow, Joseph’s somehow still only 32, so maybe this will fuel his revenge tour next season.

Alperen Sengun is the Anthony Edwards of Nikola Jokics

How much more perfect could a syllogism be? Imagine a more fluid version of Jokic with hops, and Sengun is the immediate resulting mental image. Hard to hit a nail more perfectly on the head than this.

Wemby is the LeBron of Bol Bols

Oh boy, I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to hear this comparison. It’s absolutely perfect! Many people thought that Wemby would turn out to just be a slightly taller and more skilled version of Bol Bol, and some still do. Obviously, Bol is just misunderstood, and the league would be screwed if he was unleashed. Hey, I could’ve gone pro too if my parents gave me a chance, but they just wanted to keep the NBA’s competitive balance in check.

Josh Hart is the Josh Harts of Josh Harts

This is just perfect on so many levels. Put simply, Josh Hart is just the quintessential version of, well, Josh Hart. He gets cardio each game by running around manically, sends out the most unhinged tweets, and is still waiting for someone to give him a high five. Unironically, he’s probably my favorite personality in the league, and I’m not quite sure what that says about me…

This kind of thing would be funny to apply to our own lives. For example, you could say, “Bill Huan could be the Brandon Miller of Zach Lowes,” but maybe he’s only the Markelle Fultz version. Additionally, “J.R. Wilco might be the Tre Jones of Floyd Perry Bakers.”

So, what does everyone else think of these comparisons? Comment below some of your own!
