Atalanta staged a remarkable comeback, defeating Napoli 2-1 at the New Balance Arena, with super-sub Lazar Samardžić striking the decisive goal late in the Serie A clash.

Napoli arrived in Bergamo third in the league table, aiming to cement their Champions League spot. Seventh-placed Atalanta sought to close the gap, riding a strong run of form with four wins in their last five outings.

The visitors seized an early lead in the 18th minute. Napoli defender Sam Beukema headed home from a well-placed cross by Miguel Gutiérrez. The goal stunned the home crowd and put Napoli ahead.

Napoli’s advantage gave them confidence, but Atalanta pressed for an equalizer. However, the home side struggled to create clear-cut chances. Juan Jesus received a yellow card for unsportsmanlike conduct in the 37th minute, adding tension to the game.

Despite controlling less possession, Napoli looked dangerous on the counter-attack. Goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi was tested but kept Atalanta within one goal. The teams went into the break with Napoli holding a slender lead.

Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini surely demanded more attacking intent from his side during the interval. A shift in tactics was needed to break down Napoli’s resilient defense and turn the tide.

Atalanta emerged with renewed purpose, making an immediate substitution with K. Sulemana coming on after half-time. The changes began to pay off as they started to dominate possession and push forward.

The equalizer arrived in the 61st minute, sparking celebrations. Mario Pašalić finished neatly after a precise assist from Nicola Zalewski, leveling the score. The goal invigorated Atalanta, who pushed for a winner.

More substitutions followed for both sides, with Gianluca Scamacca joining the attack for Atalanta, seeking to add fresh impetus. Napoli brought on defenders and midfielders to regain control, but the momentum had shifted.

The winning goal came from a true super-sub in the 81st minute. Lazar Samardžić, having entered the fray just after half-time, drilled a shot past the Napoli keeper. He was assisted by fellow substitute Lorenzo Bernasconi, completing Atalanta’s impressive turnaround.

Atalanta ended with 57% possession, a significant improvement from the first half, and 7 shots on target compared to Napoli’s 4. Despite Napoli’s higher Expected Goals (xG) of 1.08 to Atalanta’s 0.75, the home side proved more clinical when it mattered. Napoli goalkeeper Vanja Milinković-Savić made 5 saves, preventing a wider margin.

This crucial 2-1 victory moves Atalanta closer to the European qualification spots, further strengthening their top-seven position. For Napoli, it represents a missed opportunity to solidify their Champions League aspirations, leaving them to reflect on a dramatic defeat.
