Another Home Draw for the Philadelphia Union 2-2 against CF Montreal

June 1, 2024

Chester, PA

It has happened so frequently this year that it is hard to put your finger on the reason why.  Philadelphia conceded an early CF Montreal goal in the first minute of play when Sunusi Ibrahim shot from outside the box off of an assist from Dominik Yankov.  Once again, the Union put itself in the position of coming from behind, even though it was the dominant team in both halves, having the bulk of possession, 24 shot attempts to Montreal’s 6, and 10 shots on goal to Montreal’s 3.

Then, at the 45th minute, with the score 1-0, Montreal’s Ariel Lassiter received a red card for an elbow to the face of Philadelphia’s José Martínez.

Due to the red card, the second half looked to be more promising for Philadelphia.  In the 56th minute, Dániel Gazdag beat Montreal’s keeper Sebastian Breza and Breza tripped Gazdag to save the goal.  A PK was awarded and the consistent Dániel Gazdag converted for the first Philadelphia Union score.  Then, two minutes later, Quinn Sullivan was approaching the Montreal box and passed to an awaiting Mikael Uhre, who faked-out his defender and shot right for the second Philadelphia score.

With the score 2-1, Philadelphia seemed well suited to grab three points.  But five minutes later Philadelphia’s  defender Jack Elliott was ejected.  The card was first issued as a yellow and then reissued as red without the assistance of VAR.  Montreal’s Raheem Edwards was injured on the play, and the hypothesis is that the red card was based on the injury rather than the conduct of Elliott – a foul that could have gone either way.

With the sides again even, in the 66th minute, Montreal’s  Samuel Piette shot the final goal to level the score at 2-2.  The game stayed at that score until the final whistle.
