If you’re brand new to golf, walking into a fitting bay can feel overwhelming. You look at shiny new drivers and probably think, “I need whatever the pros are playing,” or “That huge clubhead looks like a beginner’s slice-buster; I shouldn’t touch it.”

It turns out even former PGA Tour stars fall into that exact same trap, although as we go along this modern tech road…that is changing. Technology is slowly overpowering personal bias.

To see how equipment really works, Ping tour rep Kenton Oates and I worked on metal woods with former Tour winner Hunter Mahan who hit every single driver in Ping’s current lineup.

When Mahan finally tested the oversized Ping G-series 440K driver — a club some might find an odd fit for him — it completely changed how he looked at driver performance. It made him consider his own bias, a reminder for us all you should try golf equipment that is completely outside your comfort zone.

Breaking down drivers: What every beginner should know

Manufacturers usually divide their driver lineup into a few distinct categories. Here is how each Ping model stacked up during Mahan’s test:

  • The LST (Low Spin Technology): This is the traditional “Tour pro” driver and one of the most played on Tour (even popular among free agents like Jake Knapp, Chris Gotterup and even Patrick Cantlay for some time). It’s built for players who generate faster clubhead speeds and need to keep their spin down. Mahan used his old G400 LST as his baseline because it’s a shape he’s used to. Interesting enough, I think low-spin platforms are actually better for “faster” (above 95 mph swing speed) slicers. The low spin, lower lofted platforms kill all spin and get the player hit a straight pull which helps with distance as well.
  • The SFT (Straight Flight Technology): Built with weight shifted toward the heel, this club is engineered to help fight a slice. When Mahan hit it, he immediately noticed it sat closed: “It’s a lot more closed than mine… it has more loft.” While it helped turn the ball over, Mahan’s elite swing speed quickly overwhelmed it. As Oates put it, for regular golfers struggling to hit it straight, “This is like a sledgehammer because it’s going to do the thing… you can’t overcook it.”
  • The Max: This is the middle-ground, catch-all driver designed for everyday golfers. It offers a slightly higher launch window with extra stability. Mahan found it surprisingly playable, and fast, producing a higher peak height while keeping spin manageable.
  • The 440K (The Alpha): At first glance, a massively high-MOI head looks intimidating or overly bulky. But when Mahan adjusted the loft down slightly, he unlocked elite numbers: “That was the fastest of the bunch… 115 mph [swing speed] at 173 and a half [mph ball speed], 10 [degrees of] launch at 2200 [rpm].” Kenton and crew summed it up to this: “The K driver is the head that can be all things to a ton of different players.”

Lessons from the rack: Why looks can be deceiving

If this all sounds familiar, it’s because we saw the exact same phenomenon earlier in the day, during Hunter’s iron testing session. That was a wild scene.

When beginners — and even low-handicappers — shop for irons, they often suffer from visual bias. They refuse to look at cavity-back or high-MOI game-improvement irons because they want something small, thin, and “blade-like” that looks cool in the bag. Yes, we all suffer from wanting a cool look vs., as Ping puts it, something that will “play your best.”

But just like iron fittings teach you that forgiveness doesn’t sacrifice performance, testing the 440K driver proved that modern technology can increase stability with tour-level ball speeds and spin numbers. When you drop your ego and test across categories, the numbers will almost always override your eyes.

Why you should try everything

For a new golfer, the biggest takeaway here is simple: never judge a golf club by its looks.

Golfers are notoriously guilty of brand and category bias. Beginners assume premium shafts or adjustable weights are “too advanced,” while better players assume oversized heads or “forgiveness” platforms aren’t for them. But preconceived notions are the enemy of good golf. When you refuse to test outside your comfort zone, you miss out on technology that can instantly fix your slice, add 20 yards to your drive or optimize you in ways you weren’t even considering.

Mahan’s session with the 440K proves that modern club design has evolved past old-school stereotypes. A large head doesn’t have to spin wildly out of control, and a players-profile doesn’t have to punish you on every mishit.

Be sure to check out the entire video. Mahan also runs through 440 fairway woods, and the rules still apply — forgiveness and predictability is paramount. Good golf is played from a high floor, not a high ceiling.
