Wembanyama draws comparisons to Wilt Chamberlain, ‘Superman’ after historic night against Mavericks

Victor Wembanyama had a career night, scoring 52 points and notching 24 rebounds along with eight blocks to sneak the San Antonio Spurs a one-point win against the Dallas Mavericks 112-111 on Wednesday night.

Wembanyama joined elite company with Wilt Chamberlain and Bob McAdoo as the only players in NBA history to record a 50-20-5 stat line in a game, according to Basketball Reference.

“It should be like this more often,” Wembanyama said.

Dylan Harper scored 21 points, and Stephon Castle had 17 points and 10 rebounds to help continue the Spurs’ six-game win streak.

Wembanyama said he played sick Wednesday evening and even rolled his ankle during the game.

“I am still (sick), but I don’t have the weakness anymore when you get a virus,” Wembanyama said.

Harper compared Wembanyama’s performance to Superman.

“That’s greatness,” Harper said. “He’s Superman. He rolls an ankle and pops right up and acts like nothing happened.”

After losing the first two games of the regular season, the Spurs sit in 5th place in the Western Conference with a 6-2 record. Head coach Mitch Johnson said the team is back to playing a familiar form of basketball that took them to the finals last season.

“We’re starting to finally play the brand of basketball that we know how and how we should play,” Johnson said.

The Spurs play Friday in Sacramento against the Kings at 9 p.m. CT for their first matchup in the NBA Cup.

Last December, the Silver and Black fell to the New York Knicks 124-113 in the Cup final.
