The San Antonio Spurs returned to the floor Wednesday for the second day of training camp.
With new faces on the coaching staff and on the hardwood, the Spurs said the team is focused on taking the right steps early in the preseason.
Veteran guard Devin Vassell and second-year forward Carter Bryant spoke with reporters after practice Wednesday. Vassell acknowledged the discipline it takes to approach the preseason day by day and not look too far ahead.
“It’s human nature. You want to be back in that situation, but you can’t skip a day, you can’t skip training camp, you can’t skip preseason, you can’t skip opening night, you can’t skip the long back-to-backs,” Vassell said. “You can’t sit here and just say, ‘Ah, you snap your fingers and you’re back in the Finals.’ It just doesn’t work like that.”
Even though the Spurs are coming off a Finals season, a return to that stage is not guaranteed.
“We can’t fast-forward anything, so we just take it day by day,” Vassell said.
Bryant said he is focused on staying present.
“I’m just trying to win basketball games. Just understanding what I can provide to this team and how I can be successful and how we can be successful as a collective,” Bryant said.
Both players said the team’s chemistry has picked up where it left off, including with the new additions.
The Spurs will host their first preseason game Oct. 8 against the Atlanta Hawks at the Frost Bank Center.
