Summer League Grades: San Antonio Spurs vs. Milwaukee Bucks – Game #6

The San Antonio Spurs improved to 2-1 in Las Vegas following a 90-80 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks. The Spurs had command of the game for most of the contest and made enough big plays in the fourth quarter to hold on for the win.

Ja’Kobi Gillespie

Gillespie had been playing really well recently in summer league but he laid an egg against the Bucks. He was 2-for-6 from two-point range and 1-for-6 on three-pointers. He also turned it over five times while tallying only one assist. Considering his assist-to-turnover ratio had been strong, we can chalk this up to an anomaly. The silver lining for Gillespie was that he was 5-for-5 at the free throw line and played quality defense throughout.

Grade: D+

Maliq Brown

Strong Diaw vibes in this one. Brown didn’t miss — but he only shot one time in 29 minutes. But, man, was he involved all over the place. I had criticized his rebounding previously but he had nine boards in this game. His great hands were on display, as he totaled four steals and a block — and had many other deflections. Perhaps most impressively, Brown led the way with five assists. He’s never going to be a great scorer but if he can defend, rebound and pass? Yeah, that’d be a nice player for a second round pick.

Grade: A-

Emanuel Miller

Miller played better. With more offensive responsibility, he had 13 points in 29 minutes and hit half of his ten field goal attempts. While he didn’t hit a three or register an assist, Miller was strong on the boards (six) and played his best defensive game of summer league. He has his weaknesses but he’s a big wing who can defend, rebound and play with a consistent amount of effort.

Grade: B

RJ Davis

With Gillespie struggling, the Spurs need points from elsewhere — and Davis delivered. He played 29 minutes and led the Spurs with 20 points. He was 4-for-9 on twos, 2-for-7 on threes and 4-for-7 at the line. His efficiency was lacking but the Spurs needed points by any means possible. Davis had three assists and only one turnover, so at least he was efficient in that regard.

Igor Milicic Jr.

I mean, he’s difficult to miss. Milicic is a ball of energy — and there’s good and bad in that. He was 2-for-5 from three-point land but he was 0-for-2 on twos and turned the ball over six times. He made up for some of those mistakes by pulling down six rebounds and getting two blocks and a steal — but, yeah, Milicic has some refining to do.

Grade: C

Hyunjung Lee

Lee was 2-for-2 from two-point territory and 5-for-7 at the line. He also had three rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block in 14 minutes. That sounds good … until you factor in that Lee was 0-for-5 from three-point range. Considering his primary skill is shooting, that has to classify as a disappointing night at the office for the native of South Korea.

RJ Melendez

Melendez was energetic on his way to nine points in 12 minutes. He hit a three-pointer and was perfect at the line. I liked how hard he played and he was able to minimize his mistakes.

Jayden Nunn

It was good to see Nunn bounce back with a solid performance. He had been struggling lately but he was 2-for-4 from the field and had three rebounds and a steal in ten minutes.

Miles Barnstable

Barnstable would be a good add to the team in Austin. He’s athletic, he can dribble, he can pass and he plays a smart brand of basketball.

Harry Wessels

Wessels is a big, tall Australian with good rebounding instincts. He showed off those instincts with four rebounds in ten minutes against Milwaukee.

Zakai Zeigler

Not the greatest statistical showing for Zeigler. In four minutes, he had four turnovers and two fouls.

David Muoka

Muoka is big, athletic and has good timing. Those attributes were on display as he had a pair of offensive boards and a block in three minutes.

Corliss Williamson

This was a good win for Williamson. Playing without Carter Bryant and Tarris Reed Jr, the Spurs played rugged defense to capture the win. I was especially impressed with how Williamson put Brown in positions to show off his talents.

Grade: B+
