Off-duty Bexar County deputy arrested on family violence charge, BCSO says

A Bexar County sheriff’s deputy was taken into custody Sunday after allegedly assaulting a family member, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

A family member said they were assaulted by now-former deputy Johanna Villanueva, according to the release. Villanueva was off duty at the time of the alleged assault.

Villanueva, 25, was arrested by Bexar County Sheriff’s Office investigators Monday afternoon on a charge of assault bodily injury/family violence.

Court records show the charge is considered a Class A misdemeanor. Her bond was set at $4,500.

According to Bexar County jail records, Villanueva was released on bond just before 5 a.m. Tuesday.

The sheriff’s office said she had been employed with BCSO for a year. Villanueva resigned in lieu of termination following her arrest, a BCSO spokesperson said.

Sheriff’s deputies said it is conducting a criminal investigation into the alleged assault.

Villanueva’s next court appearance is tentatively set for Oct. 6, documents show.
