Qualification/Relegation
- Round of 32
Mexico secured a dominant 3-0 victory over Czechia at the Estadio Azteca to maintain their perfect start to the World Cup.
A brilliant second-half performance ensured the designated away side took all three points. Mateo Chávez Garcia broke the deadlock before Julián Quiñones and Álvaro Fidalgo sealed the win.
Before kickoff, Mexico sat at the top of the standings after a winning start. Meanwhile, Czechia needed a positive result to improve their position after picking up just one point in their opener.
The match started at a frantic pace under the afternoon sun. Czechia controlled the ball early on and looked to build from the back. The European side attempted several long-range efforts, but none troubled the goalkeeper.
At the other end, Mexico looked dangerous whenever they broke forward on the wings. However, both teams lacked quality in the final third, and the first half ended without any goals.
Both managers needed to inspire their teams during the halftime break. Czechia wanted to turn their possession into real chances, while Mexico needed to be sharper in attack.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 55th minute. Chávez Garcia found space inside the box and drilled a powerful shot past the goalkeeper to spark wild celebrations.
Mexico quickly doubled their lead in the 61st minute. Quiñones showed great composure to control a pass from Jorge Sánchez and slot his effort home from close range.
Czechia tried to mount a comeback but faced a solid defensive wall. Edson Álvarez picked up a yellow card in the 64th minute for a tactical foul to stop a counter-attack.
Fidalgo put the gloss on the performance in the 94th minute. The substitute received a pass from Roberto Alvarado and curled a beautiful strike into the top corner.
The statistics showed Mexico’s clinical edge. They generated an expected goals rating of 1.79 from 11 total shots. Czechia managed only one shot on target despite having 52 percent possession.
This result keeps Mexico at the top of the standings with six points from two games. Czechia must win their final game of the group stage to have any hope of progressing.
