Girona and Real Sociedad shared the spoils in a competitive La Liga clash, with Jon Martin’s early strike for Sociedad cancelled out by Cristhian Stuani’s second-half equalizer.

Girona hosted Real Sociedad at Estadio Municipal de Montilivi on May 14, 2026, in a match between two sides fighting for different objectives. The hosts occupied 19th place with 39 points from 35 matches, while Sociedad sat eighth with 44 points. Girona arrived seeking points to bolster their survival hopes, while Sociedad aimed to climb the table.

Real Sociedad struck first through Jon Martin in the 28th minute. The away side’s forward found the back of the net early, giving Sociedad a crucial lead. Martin’s clinical finish rewarded Sociedad’s bright opening to the match.

Girona controlled possession through the first half, enjoying 60% of the ball. However, Sociedad’s defensive shape proved difficult to break down. The hosts created chances but failed to find an equalizer before the interval.

Referee bookings increased as the first half progressed. Alejandro Barrenetxea received a yellow card in the 12th minute for Sociedad. The physical nature of the contest became evident early on.

The second half brought renewed intensity from the home side. Girona pushed forward aggressively, searching for an equalizer. Sociedad’s defense faced sustained pressure from the attacking hosts.

Cristhian Stuani leveled the match in the 66th minute. The Girona forward tucked away his chance to draw the teams level. Stuani’s goal shifted momentum firmly toward the home team.

Card count spiraled as the match progressed. Javi Aramburu, Mikel Oyarzabal, and Sergio Gomez all received yellows for Sociedad. Alejandro Francés, Javi Roca, Diego Caleta-Car, Gonzalo Carrera, and Blas Turrientes earned cautions for their respective teams.

Both sides created limited clear-cut chances after Stuani’s goal. Álex Remiro made four important saves for Sociedad. Girona’s goalkeeper recorded just one save but faced fewer direct threats overall.

The statistics reflected Girona’s dominance in possession and shot creation. Girona attempted 29 shots compared to Sociedad’s six. Expected goals favored the home team at 2.22 to 0.33, yet Sociedad’s efficiency nearly held firm.

Girona managed 560 passes with 91% accuracy, controlling the tempo throughout. Sociedad completed 401 passes at 82% accuracy while defending deep for much of the contest. The away side’s discipline kept them in the match despite being outshot.

Azzedine Ounahi impressed for Girona with a rating of 8.3. Martin delivered a strong showing for Sociedad despite being outnumbered in midfield. Both sides’ defenses worked hard against relentless attacking pressure.
