Qualification/Relegation

  • Relegation – Championship

Brentford snatched a sensational 4-3 Premier League victory over Burnley at Turf Moor. Mikkel Damsgaard’s late goal secured all three points in a dramatic encounter.

Burnley, positioned 19th in the league, desperately sought points to escape the relegation zone. Brentford, sitting seventh, aimed to strengthen their bid for European qualification. Both teams carried mixed recent form into the contest.

The visitors started brightly, opening the scoring in the ninth minute. Mikkel Damsgaard slotted home after a precise assist from Dango Ouattara. Brentford continued their strong attacking display.

Igor Thiago then doubled Brentford’s lead in the 25th minute, expertly converting a pass from Damsgaard. Nine minutes later, Kevin Schade extended the advantage, firing in Brentford’s third goal. Burnley looked overwhelmed by the quick succession of strikes.

Just before halftime, Burnley found a lifeline. In the third minute of added time, Michael Kayode inadvertently put the ball into his own net. This own goal reduced the shortfall to 3-1, offering a glimmer of hope for the home side.

The halftime whistle saw Burnley needing a massive response. They faced a challenging two-goal shortfall but had momentum from the late first-half goal. Brentford needed to maintain their defensive composure.

Burnley emerged from the break with renewed determination. Jaidon Anthony immediately capitalized, scoring in the 47th minute after an assist from Hannibal Mejbri. Turf Moor erupted as the shortfall narrowed to a single goal.

The comeback was complete on the hour mark. Zian Flemming, assisted by Mejbri once again, fired home the equalizer for Burnley. The home side had clawed back from a three-goal disadvantage.

Burnley thought they had taken the lead in the 78th minute when Flemming found the net again. However, VAR intervention disallowed the goal for offside, denying a potential turning point. The decision left the home crowd frustrated.

With just moments left, Brentford delivered a decisive blow. Damsgaard grabbed his second goal of the match in the 93rd minute, assisted by Rico Henry. This late strike propelled the Bees back into the lead. Burnley had one more disallowed goal from Aaron Barnes in the 98th minute for handball, sealing their fate.

Brentford’s attacking output was evident with an Expected Goals (xG) of 1.94 compared to Burnley’s 0.97. The visitors managed 16 total shots, with seven on target, while Burnley had 12 shots, putting three on target. Brentford also held 59% possession.

This thrilling victory boosted Brentford to 7th in the Premier League table, solidifying their European aspirations. Meanwhile, Burnley remained stuck in 19th position, deeply entrenched in the relegation battle after a heartbreaking defeat.
