Strasbourg delivered a stunning performance, defeating high-flying Lyon 3-1 at Stade de la Meinau. Diego Moreira was the standout player, orchestrating a crucial Ligue 1 victory.

Lyon entered the match in formidable form, sitting third in Ligue 1 with an impressive five-game winning streak. Strasbourg, eighth, sought to build on recent results.

The game began cautiously. Strasbourg, however, gradually asserted more pressure, utilizing their home support to test the visitors’ defence.

The deadlock broke in the 37th minute. Diego Moreira showed exceptional skill, providing a precise assist for Martial Godo. Godo fired a powerful shot past Lyon goalkeeper Dominik Greif.

Strasbourg carried their slender one-goal advantage into half-time. Lyon’s defence looked vulnerable, needing to regroup and find a more penetrative approach in the second half.

The second half began with renewed vigour from the hosts. They quickly doubled their advantage in the 52nd minute when Samir El Mourabet’s clever pass found Diego Moreira. Moreira expertly slotted the ball home.

Tensions flared just minutes later, resulting in a flurry of yellow cards. Lyon’s Paulo Fonseca and Reiss Kluivert, alongside Strasbourg’s Andrew Omobamidele, all received bookings around the 57th minute.

Lyon found a crucial lifeline in the 59th minute. Corentin Tolisso, assisted by Roman Yaremchuk, converted a chance to reduce the deficit. Young forward Endrick also picked up a yellow card shortly after.

Strasbourg, however, remained resolute and sealed their victory in the 83rd minute. Following a foul in the box, Joaquin Panichelli confidently dispatched a penalty, restoring Strasbourg’s two-goal cushion.

Strasbourg’s attacking prowess was clear in the statistics. They registered 13 shots, with 7 on target, and an impressive xG of 2.07. Lyon, in contrast, managed just 4 shots, 2 on target, and a low xG of 0.28.

Both teams notably shared 50% ball possession, highlighting a midfield battle.

This crucial 3-1 victory sees Strasbourg strengthen their position in the top half of Ligue 1. For Lyon, the defeat snaps their impressive winning run, potentially impacting their pursuit of a top-two finish.
