4 dead in multi-vehicle crash involving small bus on I-35 on Southwest Side, authorities say

Four people were killed after the driver of a stolen Chevrolet Camaro caused a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 35 on the Southwest Side on Thursday, according to San Antonio police.

The crash was reported just after 2:45 p.m. on the southbound lanes of I-35 near Cassin Road, which is not far from the I-35 and Loop 410 interchange.

In a video posted on the San Antonio Police Department Facebook page, Chief William McManus said the crash began when a stolen white Chevrolet Camaro collided with a small bus hauling a trailer.

The Camaro struck the van’s trailer, causing it to roll on its passenger side before striking a guardrail. Multiple people were ejected from the bus during the crash, a preliminary report from SAPD on Friday said.

McManus also said four individuals, including one armed with an assault rifle, fled the Camaro and the scene of the crash. However, SAPD’s report said “an unconfirmed number of individuals” exited the Camaro. The report does not indicate if any of the individuals were armed.

The individuals who escaped have not been found as of Friday morning, police said.

Two people died at the scene, and two others died at University Hospital. The chief said two of the people killed were “senior adults.”

It’s unclear how many people suffered life-threatening injuries at this time. The San Antonio Fire Department on Thursday said eight people suffered life-threatening injuries, while 13 others were hospitalized with minor injuries.

Among the others injured in the collision range in age from young children to seniors, McManus said.

As of Friday, SAPD said 16 people remain injured and are still receiving medical assistance.

A spokesperson for University Health said in an email Thursday night that University Hospital treated 15 patients, including four children.

The pediatric patients were “all in good condition” on Thursday. The 11 conditions of the adult patients, according to the spokesperson, were as follows:

  • 5 in good condition
  • 2 in fair condition
  • 2 in critical conditions
  • 2 in are deceased

The southbound lanes of I-35 at Cassin Road were closed for more than five hours. TxDOT said those lanes reopened on Thursday evening.
